Vidar Jensen (Drops, North) and Daida Moreno (Mistral, North) have both taken victory in their respective divisions of the men’s and women’s single elimination at the first PWA Wave Grand Prix of the season. Jensen, the wild flyer from Norway defeated his best friend Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Proof, Neil Pryde) in a closely fought battle as the contest went down to the wire late this afternoon. Daida Moreno had to overcome a fierce challenge from her twin sister Iballa (Mistral, North) in the women’s final but held her nerve to clinch victory.
<photo1> <br>It was a perfect finish to the competition today here in Vargas with the dramatic action on the beach eventually finishing at 7pm this evening. Jensen who lives in Gran Canaria sailed a brilliant heat in the final and performed a repertoire, which included one handed forward loops, back loops and down the line aerial antics on the waves. In the battle for third and fourth Dutch sailor Peter Volwater (F2, Arrows) defeated radical Hawaiian sailor, Josh Angulo (RRD). Volwater landed a huge back loop and attempted a double forward during the heat, Angulo battled hard but was unable to match the Dutch sailors higher jumps. <br><photo2> <br>The women’s competition was equally thrilling with the Moreno sisters going head to head in an explosive final. Daida managed to find better ramps and pulled of the only back loop of the heat, which helped seal, the deal and gain her the favour of the judges. The battle for third and fourth was won by Karin Jaggi (F2, Arrows) who took out Tony Frey (RRD) of Greece in a closely fought encounter. <br><photo3> <br>The competition here in Vargas has also seen the bright light of a rising star. Eighteen year old Jonas Ceballos Sanchez (Proof, Simmer, E40) shone and pulled off some of the most impressive manoeuvres of the contest. <br> <br>The ballistic action we experienced on Tuesday showed us just how superb the conditions can be here in Vargas. The action today was in tougher conditions but made for a tense and dramatic finish to what has been an incredible competition. Vidar Jensen and Daida Moreno the winners of the event will no doubt be celebrating tonight…Gran Canaria is not only renowned for its incredible winds but also has quite a reputation for those that like to party! <br> <br>VIDAR JENSEN (N44, Drops, North) <br> <br>“We had one really good day and a pretty decent last day here in Vargas. I am super happy right now. This is the second time I have won in Gran Canaria and it has been a couple of years since the last time. This is definitely going to help my motivation for this year. I could not ask for a better start” <br> <br>BJORN DUNKERBECK (E11, Proof, Neil Pryde) <br> <br>“It was kind of gusty out there today. I was having difficulty getting speed for my jumps. I had a couple of all right waves but didn’t really get the jumps I wanted” <br> <br>DAIDA MORENO (E64, Mistral, North) <br> <br>“I am really happy. I won because of the back loop that I did. I am excited because this is the first time that Iballa and myself are first and second in an official PWA <br></photo3></photo2></photo1>
