Gran Canaria PWA World Cup

Day 3: The next generation of wave sailors take centre stage in Pozo

After the conclusion of the men’s and women’s contest yesterday - which saw Philip Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida Moreno (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins) successfully defend their single elimination crowns - the best youth’s in the world took centre stage today and produced a spectacular show in winds of 20-30 knots.

Fourteen of the most promising, up and coming wave sailors participated in the first youth’s contest of the week and they proved that the future of wave sailing is in excellent hands. After a fierce contest the fleet was whittled down to the top two sailors - Noah Vocker Roche (Fanatic / North / Maui Ultra Fins) and Loick Lesauvage (Goya Windsurfing.

The final was tightly contested with both Vocker Roche and Lesauvage showing off their full repertoire of jumps - with the best being ankle dry backloops and a fully playing forward. The dual remained very even in the air, but Lesauvage was just able to edge the ahead on the wave, which eventually earned him the title. The young Frenchman particularly impressed with his vertical approach to wave riding.

Marc Pare (99NoveNove / Simmer / Maui Ultra Fins) completed the podium today as he saw off Juliann Salmonn in the battle for third and fourth. Pare landed a planing forward, pushloop to put the disappointment of missing out on the final behind him, but Salmonn put up a stern test as he linked several excellent waves together with both frontside and backside aerials.

Tomorrow will see a joint contest with a pro joining forces with one of the junior sailors. The forecast looks similar to today, so there should be plenty of wind again. The skippers’ meeting has been called for 10:30am - with the action commencing from 11am. You’ll be able to follow all of the fantastic action as it happens via the PWA live stream by tuning into www.pwaworldtour.com.
