Gran Canaria PWA World Cup

Day 6: A catchup with a few of the sailors as the waves take a break

The waves took a break on the penultimate day of the 2015 Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival meaning it wasn’t possible to run the trials heats for the Red Bull Super Session, which will be held in memory of Peter Volwater.

The hope is that the forecast predicting more wind for tomorrow comes true to allow a spectacular end to what has been an epic event with Pozo providing the goods again. Throughout the day we caught up with a few of the sailors to see how they rated their performance at the event:

Philip Köster (Starboard / Severne / Maui Ultra Fins):

“Stoked to start this season with a win! Still feeling a bit sore after the triple attempt but feeling great and looking forward to the super session tomorrow.”

Dany Bruch (Starboard / Challenger Sails / AL360):

“Super happy with my 3rd place in the single elimination, and very happy to start the year with a 4th place overall here! My Starboard Kode and my 3 batten sail DB edition from Challenger Sails has been working great. Thanks to all my friends for the great support and of course thanks to my lovely wife for always being there.”

Antoine Martin (JP / NeilPryde):

“From Guadeloupe Caribbean "light wind" to Gran Canaria "The windiest place ever" I cannot be more happy with my 7th place for the first step of the World Cup! Congrats to Philip for taking the lead! And thanks everyone for the support!”

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Mystic / Maui Ultra Fins):

“A dream I didn't know I had came true. Finishing on the podium in Pozo next to the twins is an honour. I battled for 3rd place with Steffi Wahl who had steadily been climbing the riders. I'm not gonna say I was lucky… But I definitely need to work on the waverides! It was fun to watch everybody sail. Great to see Pozo firing like it should again. Ps: I'm finally going up in the air a bit. Been landing pushloops. Can I PLEASE join the wave club now?”

Amanda Beenen (99NoveNove / Point-7):

“The main event is over here in Pozo! A 5th place for me to open the season with! It's not great but then again, it's also not bad! I do hope I can show what I've got in Tenerife in two weeks from now! All the girls sailed amazing as the conditions have been insane! I am really proud of my girl Ingrid Larouche who came all the way from the states to try out the PWA. Port tack isn't her best side and especially not with 60knots onshore wind. Never-the-less she did great and I have no doubt she will get a nice result in Tenerife! Of course a big congrats to Daida Ruano Moreno and Iballa Ruano Moreno taking 1st and 2nd place and for organising such an amazing event! And to Steffi Wahl and SQ for taking the 4th and 3rd also a big congrats!”

Leon Jamaer (JP / NeilPryde):

“Another year here in Gran Canaria and I couldn’t really find the waves rhythm once again. A 17th place is not what I aimed for but it only means I will push harder now! I am glad the judges are liking my doubles.”
