Tension builds as sailors remain on standby through lack of wind.

Following four days of strong winds and intense Freestyle action, Sotavento fell calm early this morning leaving the world’s finest marooned on the beach, their finely tuned equipment left idle, but ready.

Luckily all Super X racers had the chance to get out and test their skills the previous evening when the course was set on the water. Even the warm up session of the new and exciting discipline was a big crowd pleaser and the oohs and ahs on the beach were easily audible over the sound of the wind.

There have been many developments in the discipline since its inception here in Fuerteventura last year, but the main differences can be seen in the skill of the riders themselves. All of the top Super Xers are now performing the Spocks, Forward Loops and Duck Gybes faster, on bigger sails and in more wind. The courses also now include gates on either end of the jumps and the biggest obstacles we have seen yet at 1.2m high!!

Fuerteventura will be the final event of this year’s PWA Super X World Tour, following three very successful events in Leucate, Costa Brava and Lanzarote. Antoine Albeau (AHD, Neil Pryde) is currently leading the race for the World Title and is the favorite to become the first PWA Super X World Champion. Albeau’s overall dominance of the discipline has weakened over the season though and Cyril Moussilmani (Fanatic), Robby Swift (JP, Neil Pryde) and Matt Pritchard (Gaastra) will be looking to unseat the would be king.
