2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup
The wind teased the competitors for the majority of day 5 of the 2022 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup as conditions remained on the edge of being competable. Throughout the day several sailors were tempted out on to the water, but the wind was never really strong enough to allow for consisting jumping and wave riding, so the contest remained on hold.
With the wind remaining on the lighter side we managed to catchup with the Moreno twins, who claimed the top two spots on the podium - Iballa (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) and Daida (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins), third in the single, and Justyna Sniady (North Sails / Maui Ultra Fins), who finished 4th, to gain their thoughts on how the Single Elimination went:
Iballa Moreno: “Despite the conditions being challenging for everyone I was happy to make it through the heats especially making a final against my sister Daida!. I was riding 4.2m Severne Blade and board 72L. I felt comfortable throughout all the heats and focused to get my two jumps and two rides on the scoring line. Anyone could win a heat nowadays and I was lucky and happy that all went in my favour yesterday. I’m used to sail on bigger sails.”
Moreno Twins: “Super happy to have a result as the Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing World Cup. Both in the final. We have until Sunday to run the double elimination! But so far so good. Thanks to all the family and friends and sponsors for the support! Moreno Twins still in the fight."
Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins): “Although yesterday wasn’t the conditions we are all looking for here in Pozo, I still had a lot of fun being on the water. The conditions were still suitable - just lighter than normal - so for once I wasn’t s******* my pants in a heat here when we are usually stacked on 3.3s, so it was nice to be powered on a 4.5m.
Gear wise I was riding my bigger 82l board paired with either my 4.5 or 4.7m. Normally I will take my 78l up to 4.0 here, but if it gets lighter than that then I change up my board size. Overall just really happy to be competing again and the level feels much higher and everyone sailed really well, so it was fun!”
Justyna Sniady: "I started the competition 2 days ago by scoring over 19 points and was feeling confident in the water even in the marginal conditions we were getting.
As day 2 progressed and the tide got higher and higher it got more and more difficult to find waves or ramps to hit. I kept my cool in the quarterfinal finding the jumps and waves I needed. I was also happy with how I sailed in the semifinal, given the hard conditions, losing to Iballa as she found the waves I just couldn’t and ripped her way into the final.
In the losers final I felt as though the Ocean just didn’t cooperate with me anymore and I suffered that sinking feeling of facing complete flatness on almost every run out throughout that heat. I must say I was a bit gutted. Not as much about the position I got, but about not being able to show what I’ve learnt over the last 3 years. Meanwhile Sarah-Quita found good ramps and made a really great show using them, so big kudos for her performance in these tricky conditions! I know the ramps were there even in the loser final because I could see Sarah-Quita on them haha… I was just out of sync with the waves and it wasn’t my day.
All in all it was awesome to compete again and I was stoked to make the finals. Big congrats to all top 3 ladies pulling off some great moves.
I keep my fingers crossed for the double elimination and hoping to improve my performance. Still dreaming of getting the classic 3.3 crazy conditions with waves we got in 2019, but I will take anything :).
As far as the gear goes I sailed on the biggest gear I ever sailed in a heat in Pozo - a 78l board (my custom wobble and ride board for Australia) and a 4.2 North Wave (with some parts of the losers final on 3.7). Gear was working great, I really love how light even the bigger of my North Sails are, but I just need them to install a wave magnet in the next version!"
The forecast for tomorrow predicts slightly stronger winds than for today, so hopefully with a bit of luck we will be able to resume either the Men’s Single Elimination or begin the Boy’s U20 contest, which are the only fleets without a result for now. The sailors will meet again at 9:30am (GMT+1) tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 10am onwards - if conditions allow.
