Day 7: Liam Dunkerbeck wins the U20s, whilst Ben Proffitt takes down the Master’s

Day 7 of the 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam saw another full afternoon of action as the Boy’s U20s and the Master’s fleets battled it out in small waves and 20-30 knots of wind. Despite the tricky conditions there was still plenty of aerial antics on offer as the U20s and the Masters managed to make the most of the conditions on offer!

Boy’s U20s

Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins) took on Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone) in the U20 Winners’ Final and there was no stopping the reigning U20 World Champion from kicking off the season with a solid victory. Throughout the day Dunkerbeck consistently scored some of the highest wave scores, whilst a variety of well controlled stalled forwards and one-footed backloops kept his Danish rival at bay in the final.

Bjørnaa walks away from Pozo with an excellent second place after sailing consistently on his way to the final.

The podium is completed by - Lennart Neubauer (GER | Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) - after the 19-year-old came out on top against Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde), in the battle for third and fourth place, after an incredibly close heat. The two sailors were almost inseparable and in the end a tiebreak was needed to decided the duel and on this occasion it went in Neubauer’s favour.

Master’s

Dario Ojeda (Flikka / Flight Sails), Ben Proffitt (Simmer / Simmer Sails) and Toni Pijoan (Severne / Severne Sails) all successfully booked their places in the Master’s Winners’ Final and for a long time the final was going in the favour of local Ojeda. However, after a late flurry of action, Proffitt was able to turn the tie on its head. The Brit got caught on the rocks trying to wave ride, but luckily had another set of the gear on the beach, and after switching gear he landed a well controlled forward and a stylish backloop, whilst he did well to ping a frontside 360 to earn the highest wave of the the final and with it the Master’s title. Ojeda has to settle for second place, whilst Pijoan completes the podium.

The top 5 is completed by Takumi Moriya (Severne / Severne Sails), Jahdan Tyger (Severne / Severne Sails), Marc Alonso (Ezzy Sails) and Gregory Stathopoulos (Goya Windsurfing), who all share equal fifth after reaching the quarterfinals.

The forecast for tomorrow is similar to today with plenty of wind and small waves predicted, so we will just have to wait and see what happens in terms of more competition. The sailors will meet again at 10:30am tomorrow morning with the action commencing from 11am (GMT+1) onwards.
