Day 8: Liam Dunkerbeck successfully defends Single Elimination crown to claim victory on home waters

The penultimate day of the 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Windsurfing Grand Slam saw the Boy’s U20 Double Elimination completed in slightly better conditions than yesterday with slightly stronger winds and marginally better waves and the U20s put on another entertaining display. Having won the Single Elimination yesterday, Liam Dunkerbeck (Starboard / Severne Sails / Black Project Fins), once again proved too strong in the Double Elimination as the local boy makes the perfect start to his U20s world title defence.

Liam Dunkerbeck produced another accomplished display to successfully defend his Single Elimination crown from yesterday as he defeated Lennart Neubauer (Starboard / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) in the final. In the air there was nothing to separate the two teammates, but Dunkerbeck dominated in the waves as he brilliantly linked back-to-back takas to almost go into the excellent range - 7.16 points - which ultimately decided the tie, much to the delight of the home crowd as they watched their local boy come out on top.

Neubauer will be pleased with the overall result as he gained one place from the Single Elimination, but more so because this is the 19-year-olds first wave event for almost two years and also his first wave event since coming back from injury. Neubauer saw off the challenges of Anton Richter (JP / NeilPryde) and Tobias Bjørnaa (Fanatic / Duotone) before Dunkerbeck proved too much on this occasion. Neubauer will now prepare himself to compete at the Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam at the start of August.

Tobias Bjørnaa will be slightly disappointed to lose one place in the Double Elimination, but the young Dane sailed well overall and a podium here still represents an excellent result. The 17-year-old was left to rue not managing to successfully land his second jump against Neubauer, which meant he was left counting a 2.5 point backloop. Asides from that the two sailors looked evenly matched. Bjørnaa did try to hunt down an appropriate ramp in the dying stages of the heat, but on this occasion the sea didn’t offer him the opportunity.

Anton Richter remains in fourth place overall after the German brought an end to Hayata Ishii’s (RRD / RRD Sails) comeback through the Double Elimination, which saw the Japanese sailor win four heats on the bounce as he climbed into 5th place overall.

Elsewhere, Samuele Ferraro (Patrik) was able to win three consecutive heats to claim 6th place, whilst Takumi Moriya (Severne / Severne Sails) and Marc Alonso (Ezzy Sails) share joint 7th for the event.

The forecast for tomorrow in terms of wind looks very similar to today, but by the evening a ground swell is expected to arrive, so hopefully, with a bit of luck the ground swell may arrive slightly earlier to provide a wavy end to the event. The sailors will meet again for a final time at 8:30am on Sunday morning with the action commencing from 9am onwards - if conditions are suitable.
