Pozo Women's Recap

A comprehensive recap of the women's 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Wave World Cup

The 2023 Gran Canaria PWA Grand Slam came down to the wire with the double elimination being completed on the final evening in Pozo. A familiar name claimed the top spot on the podium as Daida Moreno signed off her career in the best style possible by winning the event with a powerful display of sailing!

Daida Moreno (Bruch Boards / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) extended her unbelievable winning record in Pozo Izquierdo to 22 event victories since 1999. The only time Daida looked threatened at this year’s event was when she suffered a broken mast on her opening run of the Double Elimination final, but even with only half the heat left the multiple-time world champion came roaring back to claim another emphatic victory. Daida announced her retirement shortly after the final, but it seems high unlikely that anyone will ever get close to equalling her phenomenal total here as she brings down the curtain on a glittering career.

Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard / NeilPryde / Maui Ultra Fins) tried to put a dent in Daida’s event winning record, but couldn’t quite find the means to land a telling blow to really put Daida under pressure this time around. Offringa sailed well throughout and another solid second here is enough to see the reigning world champion take the world title race lead having also finished second in Fiji last month.

Meanwhile, Lina Erpenstein (Severne / Severne Sails) completed the comeback of the Double Elimination as the German battled back from joint 5th in the single elimination to claim the final place on the prestigious podium.

Iballa Moreno (Severne / Severne Sails / Maui Ultra Fins) suffered a knee injury after the completion of the single elimination where she finished 3rd and eventually slips one place to 4th for 2023. The top 5 is completed by Justyna Sniady (North Sails / Maui Ultra Fins).
